I have got lazy in my review of books lately, but here is an actual informative review:This series begins with a rich story. The worst I can say is that there a couple of times I was confused about who was speaking. That's it. This book is practically perfect. It wraps up the lose ends you want wrapped. It leaves off in a good place for the next in the series.
Stuff I love about this story: it's not heavy handed. No points are overdone it driven home too harshly. There is an underlying respect for the reader and expectation that the author doesn't need to tell them how to interpret everything or how to feel. The characters come across as multifaceted individuals. They have humor and intelligence. I never once felt like I was being lead by my nose. It's good writing, definitely some of the best in the genre.

Sterling Mageri Series Book 1 edition by Dannika Dark Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
This was on of those books that seemed to be perpetually on my "recommended for you" lists on . It was I. The genre I liked but for some reason I kept passing it by. I'm glad I was between series and decided to finally give it a try
New-ish take on the supernatural / paranormal. Nice to finally stray from the typical "on the day I turned 17" storyline that is too common with this genre.
Instead we got a slightly flawed, very sarcastic actual 20 something. She's got a past that's only been hinted at (abusive ex) but still comes off a strong. Realistically written. Things happen that stress her and cause anxiety as they should but she never falls into victim territory.
The alpha males are each refreshingly unique but don't seem to coddle her excessively.
I'm looking forward to reading the next few books in the series
This take on Mages is one I haven't seen before and I like that it's different. It took me a bit to get into this book as it seemed like I was just as lost in the writer's world as Silver, but when I look back, I think it allows you to connect with the fear and anxiety that Silver felt at being transformed into something unknown and having no one to show you the new world that you had unwillingly been thrust into! Definitely continue this series!
I don't know who these people are leaving 5 stars. They must be very young people thinking this is what love? lust? whatever is like. The main character is so whiney, annoying, shallow, stupid, (you get the picture). I was wishing it could have rewound and the bad guy finished her off! Sad but true! She is offended that someone thinks she is, for all intent and purposes, a whore. But hello!!! she is lusting after every single guy she meets, sleeps with one, then is still fantasizing about 2 more and whining about it the whole time! AND SHE JUST MET THESE PEOPLE! Ugh, it's just so stupid, I can't even verbalize how I loath this book! Run away!
Meeting Zoë Merrick and following her immersion into the Breed World is a great escape. The world building is both cliché and fresh. Cliché with monsters and magic and vampires, all of course hidden in our world in plain sight, and yet the author puts enough fresh spin on things that it makes it interesting. But the story isn’t about the world or the magic. It’s about a person surviving a traumatic experience and fighting to make the best of it. It’s about personal relationships. So, cliché is good because I know it and can move on to the action.
The writing is light (not bogged down) and fast-paced. The characters have a sense of humor and are funny most of the time ;-). Zoë as narrator sprinkles in way-over-the-top metaphors that are sometimes jarring, but they always brought a smile, even if I was rolling my eyes. It reminded me of Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer type phraseology, “He was a cat named Ego being stroke” and “felt the alcohol tingling in my body like a warm suggestion.” “Adrenaline knocked at the door and asked if it could come in, so I let it.” Just fun.
I liked this story a lot, but there is a big however There are five books in this series. I enjoyed the first three immensely. The fourth book, Gravity, got too heavy for me (pun intended and I’m sure the author did as well). It was so heavy that I stopped reading it. I decided I didn’t want to suffer through the frustration/annoyance/aggravation/stupidity/awfulness even if it might end well. I look to books to escape the depressing world, not be tortured by others’ misery. The main character’s stupidity becomes overly annoying by Book 3 and unbearable in Book 4. Love Books 1 and 2, like Book 3, and plow through Book 4 to get to Book 5. Book 5 reviews say that it’s worth it. I decided not to.
(3.75 stars)
I loved Dannika Dark’s Seven series and have been looking forward to starting her Mageri series for a while now. It’s very hard not to compare this to the Seven series. I tried to put that out of my head but there are definitely some big differences between the two. Along with her sense of humor I really liked Silver as a main character and am invested in finding out what’s up next for her. This was a strong start to the series and am glad to be getting a different take on the Breed world. I can’t wait to watch Silver discover who she is in this new life and am also hoping that she can meet some people she can really form some deep bonds with.
