Awakening, the coming-of-age story of Suzy Kovak, begins with a sometimes interrupted flow that only adds authenticity to a child’s voice. That same voice progresses into the snarky attitude of a lonely teenager trying to find her way into adulthood. Carol Davis Luce did a very good job of portraying the life of a dysfunctional family in the 1950s. I chose to read this book because it was the recipient of an indie BRAG Medallion. I’m glad I did.Tags : AWAKENING: Secrets of a Brown Eyed Girl - Kindle edition by Carol Davis Luce. Download it once and read it on your Kindle device, PC, phones or tablets. AWAKENING Secrets of a Brown Eyed Girl edition by Carol Davis Luce Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Extremely well-written. I had read some novels by this author and she is a good author. This book was something different for her and I was amazed at how a book about a girl growing up could pull you into her world and keep you up all night until you finished. Highly reccommended.
We are proud to announce that "Awakening Secrets of a Brown Eyed Girl" by Carol Davis Luce is a B.R.A.G.Medallion Honoree. This tells a reader that this book is well worth their time and money!
My favorite genre is coming of age, and Awakening did not disappoint! The story hooked me from the beginning and didn't let go. This will go on my favorites list.
I enjoyed the book after reading the first paragraph.
Growing up in the 50's as the character in the book did I can appreciate the extreme differences between then and now.
Carol is a extemely talented author who held my interest on each and every page and was sorry to see the book end.
Her characters seem so true to life and believable.
Would definetly read a sequel to find out what happened in the rest of her life.
I highly recommend all to read it no matter what age.
I happen to know the author which makes the book even more fun to read and enjoy.
Having been a teenager in the 50's, this book really brought back memories. The story captivates you, starting when Suzy is a little girl, with all her innocence, then into her teen years, where her innocence is challenged. The characters seemed so real to me, a sign of an excellent writer. It gives a true picture of what life was like in Southern California in the middle of the 20th century.
I am a slow reader, but found that I didn't want to put this book down. It held my interest all the way through. Congratulations to the author for a great novel. I highly recommend it to everyone!
Awakening takes the reader on a journey. Through sweet, innocent Suzy's eyes, readers will be drawn in and captivated from the very first page. The story begins with Suzy at a tender, young age, and then progresses, taking the reader on a journey where they learn why Suzy is forced to grow up much faster than any young girl should have to. I was taken through a myriad of emotions as I read it, sometimes joyful, often sad, but always thought-provoking. I found myself feeling shocked and surprised at times, often worrying about not only the situations Suzy found herself in, but also with those closest in her life her mother, barely-there father, and her brother. This isn't the genre I usually read, but I'm so glad I picked up this book! I was thoroughly impressed with the story and the author's ability to keep me invested, page after page. Highly recommend!
Although pitched at a New Adult market, it took me little time to realize that this book deserves a much wider audience. Set in the 1950s, it seamlessly conveys a nostalgic sense of place that, along with the first person narrative of the young girl of Hungarian descent, Suzy Kovak, sometimes makes it read like much-loved literature of the past like To Kill a Mockingbird, Summer of My German Soldier or The Outsiders. But this 1950s is no Brady Bunch variety. There are despicable types here, like Sal, Matt Wheeler and a surprising stalker. There are secrets and lies. Hidden pregnancies. Drinking. Philandering. Gossip over Bisquick. And there are lurking dangers for the brown-eyed girl of the title. Perverts and predators, bullies and temptations abound, and there are several little twists that you won't see coming.
At times, each chapter felt like a vignette into Suzy's life and I wondered how they might tie together, but by halfway through I could not put this book down! As Suzy grows to a teenager, the precarious nature of her upbringing--absent, unreliable father; harried, sometimes weak-willed mother with a succession of unsuitable boyfriends--plays out in destructive behaviours that could see Suzy's ruin, but this is a story about hope and making choices as much as about coming of age. Above all, it is about having the power and the right to choose to lead the life you know you deserve. I couldn't help but notice the difference between Suzy and her mother, and the underlying feminist theme. The most powerful message is one of knowing when to say "no" and when you are better off alone than with a man who does not respect you. In the novel, that respect comes from a surprising and heart-warming source who would fit right in as a cast member of SE Hinton's The Outsiders.
I found Awakenings a thoroughly enjoyable, compelling and powerful novel that stays with you long after you finish the last page.
